PHP is a good language, but don’t neglect it’s out dated brother PERL which is still widely used in Linux and Unix environments.
Unfortunately you will probably have to learn ASP I know it sucks, but in the commercial world it is used.
Take a look at Flash and JavaScript as well.

ASP is useful when working on Microsoft driven servers, but PHP is cross-platform compatible.
I have taught some PHP to Undergraduates (UK) and found this book to be brilliant:
Beginning PHP, Apache, MySQL Web Development
It takes you from the simple basics through to creating your own Content Management System. I still refer to it most weeks.
