Php is really easy. You can get to grips with it in a week or so.
Learning functions may take a little longer but there are websites for that.

If you just want to design, then study PHP. If you want to run a web server with databases for a company, then learn ASP.net. Also, knowing the language is only half. Businesses will probably want to look at some samples, kind of like a photographers portfolio.

NO
I’m a hiring manager in IT and I’d check your resume first, do you have experience?
Show me something you built.
If I ask you 5 difficult techincal questions questions about PHP could you answer about integration, choices, differences, options, work arounds —no, because you only know PHP

Correct.
But so is god’s posting above

Do some projects to fill a portfolio. Just saying you know PHP will get you nowhere.

To save yourself a lot of aggravation, I advise to avoid looking for a job in the IT industry all together. It is just over saturated with qualified candidates. 98% of applicants are rejected without even being given an interview. You have to also deal with age discrimination. The attrition rates are too high, if you have too much work experience you will be considered over qualified. (so don’t expect a career in this field)
Employers are looking for young recent college graduates and are very picky about who they select. You have to have a degree from a top school with a GPA over 3.5. Then they give them a standard starting salary, just to lay them off after reaching age 40 or they start requesting too much money.
Just look at IT job ads, why do you think they have all these demands and requirements. They’re overwhelmed with resumes. Just having the skills just doesn’t cut it anymore in the IT field. It’s really competitive and people are forced to learn a whole bunch of skills and get a lot of certifications just to prove themselves.
I believe it is better to be provided with correct information before making a decision. People just don’t understand how bad it has gotten and it is better NOT to learn reality the hard way.
Excerpts from Senate testimony:
General Accounting Office found “serious analytical and methodological weaknesses” in the [ITAA/Dept. of Commerce] reports. The American Engineering Association criticized common IT hiring practices that eliminate more than 95 percent of applicants. A University of California at Davis professor decried “rampant” age discrimination by the industry and suggested that technology companies prefer to hire young, cheap, foreign programmers who are willing to work 80-hour weeks.
Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Intel Corp. and Siemens Energy and Automation Inc. are being sued by seniors who claim they were denied employment because of their age. In the Siemens case, 11 former employees over the age of 40 say they were laid off from a software facility in Minnesota, only to be replaced by younger workers.
