Short answer: yes.
Long answer: Grab some books and teach yourself PHP, take a class, ask a friend who’s a PHP expert, and look over tutorials on the Internet. All of these will contribute to your understanding of PHP and MySQL. Oh, and experimenting by yourself helps too.
Don’t forget to master HTML, as these two go hand-and-hand. You’ll have PHP to develop your application, and you’ll need HTML to display its results. You’re way more likely to get hired if you have stern knowledge of both.
Learning under Linux or Windows or some other obscure OS is your choice, so as long as the server in question runs PHP scripts (instead of ASP, Perl, etc).
The best way to learn is by doing. The more working (and non-working) scripts you make, the more you’ll learn. Also, download and examine the scripts that other people make, as learning the methods of others is equally important in your pursuit of knowledge.
With time, determination, and a bit of luck, you’ll become a PHP/MySQL developer in no time, and land that job you want.
Hope this helps, good luck!
PS: You won’t have to worry about outsourcing as much as PHP/MySQL is not as hot as C++ or other types of programming jobs. It’s still competitive nonetheless, so work hard!

PHP and MYsql are easy to learn. But you will require atleast 2 years experience to really develop good applications for the web.
What I suggest is learn the following and on theway you could learn php too.
1. XHTML
2. CSS
3. Photoshop
If you are creative enough you should not have any problems in getting the job.

Hi,
Nowadays most of the people can create websites. This is because there are plenty of WYSWYG (what you see, what you get) editors out there. You can easily create web page just clicking buttons and some draging and droping things.
But if you are really willing to be a web application developer, first you should have a concrete knowledge on HTML. Then you have to choose a scripting language.
PHP is a good choice, but PHP also a most common scripting language in these days. What I recommend you is start learning RUBY ON RAILS. Nowadays web development companies moving fast in to Ruby, because it’s powerful, easy to implement, easy to fix bugs.
Since it is a Object Oriented language you have to put more effort to study this language. But if you dedicated yourself, definitely you can do that.
Platform is not an issue. But when you design the web pages make sure to check the browser compatibility if your using CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) to style you site.
Widely using browsers are
1. Internet Explore
2. Firefox
3. Opera -
4. Safari -
The best source that I used to lean HTML and CSS is the W3C website.
Also My recommend site are as follows:
A List Apart -
Photoshop Tutorials -
PHP NET -
Also have a look at the Lynda.com titles. I personally prefer this titles most of times.
