This is a well written book starting from the basics. Coming from a asp background i was able to skip some of the sections. The examples given were very good, the footnotes were useful as well. To start off with i thought it was a little too basic, but once i got into it i was pleased i read it all through. The appendix was useful and i learnt some new stuff about MySQL as well.
Overall it gives a good grounding to php, including some good security features, useful page caching tutorial and an easy to understand explanation of RegExp!
Now onto OOP..something this book does not cover.

This book starts from the very basics of learning php and MySQL, and progresses on to more advanced concepts - for example the author gives an excellent introduction to security concepts and features of php/MySQL, worth the money for that alone!
The exercises/examples are all useful and and the author guides you through them very well.
This is highly recommended if you’re new to both php and MySQL
